A handmade set: Eastern Woodlands Quilled Effigy Neck Knife Sheath / Scalp Knife
Sheath (by Mike Taylor):
- An eighteenth century Eastern sheath with a human face effigy on the upper back panel
- This sheath was hand made from natural dyed brain-tanned deer hide and deer leg skin with hair attached
- The sheath has an effigy face representing a spirit quilled with single line technique
- Directly below where the knife enters the sheath is a small flap that is quilled using two quill zigzag and single line technique
- On the outside of this single flap are hand rolled brass cones filled with red dyed deer hair and finished off with #8 white trade beads
- The pocket that holds the knife is lined with birch bark as seen on many originals
- Bordering the outline of the sheath are #8 white trade beads while the front of the sheath with the deer leg hair was left unquilled for a simple yet elegant sheath
- Quill colors used in this sheath consist of naturally dyed red, yellow, black and natural porcupine quills; Natives were experts at finding natural dyes from plant matter and different barks and using natural mordants to achieve these vibrant colors
Scalp Knife (by Todd Bitler):
Octagonal Deer Leg Bone Scalp Knife With Copper Wire Wrap:
- Hand forged long thin blade with a fine sweeping point
- The tang of this blade slides into a notch cut into the deer leg bone and held with two copper pins and wrapped with copper wire
- The bone handle has been filed into a tapering octagonal shape which retains small stress cracks and great patina and character
- The blade being thin and long balances out the weight of the deer bone that results in a great well balanced knife (not blade or handle heavy)
- The knife blade has been stamped with my touchmark and aged
- Knife custom made to fit this sheath
